The Campbells story began in the mid nineteenth century when John Campbell, a Scottish immigrant, went to work in the gold mines in North East Victoria. Realising that he might not make his fortune from gold, he turned to the land to make his living. By 1870, John had planted the Bobbie Burns Vineyard and established Campbells of Rutherglen. As the family business was passed down through the generations, adding sheep farming to their interests and surviving a complete wipe out of their crops, it is still standing today, 145 years later. Still very much a family business and with a remarkable history to boot.
